Stouts and porters are traditionally made from dark roasted malts, but during WWII, Britain had to practically stop making them, which left the door open for a very well known Irish family to stamp their authority across the whole world!
However, stouts and porters are making a strong comeback in the UK, with their dark, roasted malt character with sultana, espresso coffee, liquorice and molasses poking through, all underlined by hefty hoppy bitterness.
Stouts were generally quite strong. Porters were less strong and loved by the street market workers of London town.
