The Homebrew Trial Jar is a good tool when testing your brew. Pour some of the brew into this plastic trial jar you can then pop your hydrometer into the solution so you can see the specific gravity (SG) or density reading of the liquid.
This can show you if the brew has finished fermenting, as beer kit instructions give an approximation of what the SG should be.
When your hydrometer reads the same value specified in the instructions you know it's then ready to bottle or barrel.
