Using Spent Grains to Make Bird Feeders

Use spent grains from all grain brewing to make lard bird feeders.

When you've finished brewing from grain, don't just throw it away.

It's great mulch for the flower bed or the vegetable plot, but make sure you let it cool down before you add it.

In the winter, it makes excellent wild bird food.

Save a 1/2 of a coconut shell or yogurt pots.  Make a couple of small holes in the end and thread some string through so you can hang it.

Take the cooled spent grains and a block of lard.

Mix the grain with the lard. You'll be surprised how much grain can be massaged into lard.

Keep going until it sticks together.

Now stuff and ram it into your coconut shell or yogurt pot.

Hang them outside.  It takes a few days for the birds to find them, and then they'll munch away.

Happy Twitching!
